Languages
St Ives High School offers study programs in Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.
The mandatory 100 hour Language program is offered in Year 7 and the language taught for this program is based on the specialty of the timetabled teacher. From Year 8 students can choose to study any of our timetabled languages. Students regularly pursue their linguistic studies into the HSC and achieve marks well above the state average with passionate and highly experienced HSC markers as their teachers. Learning a language is a lifelong project and we are very proud of the base we provide students to build their future studies and travels.
"We have a sister school in Tokyo, Japan and another in Bordeaux, France.”
Supervised travel abroad has been a feature of linguistic and cultural studies at St Ives High School. We have a sister school arrangement with a school in Tokyo, Japan and another in Bordeaux, France. While overseas tours are not the core business of a language program, these opportunities have forged lifelong friendships and energised our students in the study of languages. These authentic experiences reinforce student learning in the classroom and have raised their ability and confidence to communicate in the target language. Trips to Japan, Spain and Italy have been highly successful, improving the students’ language skills and providing direct insights into school life, history and culture. Students directly immerse themselves in a rich cultural and linguistic experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
