Wellbeing

At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.

How we support student wellbeing

Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.

Our school prioritises positive engagement between staff and students, ensuring structures are in place to facilitate every student having a staff member to whom they can confidently turn for advice and assistance at school.

St Ives High School has a strong culture of inclusion that reflects the diversity of the school community through collaboration with community partners to support equitable outcomes for all students.

We do this through:

  • teachers who help students feel welcome and included
  • promoting the explicit teaching of positive behaviour for learning in every classroom
  • access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
  • programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
  • help for students who are new or changing year levels
  • clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
  • staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
  • developing health care plans for students
  • open communication about wellbeing and support
  • creating a sense of connectedness through community partnerships

Wellbeing team

This is a team of educators with responsibility for heading up our school's wellbeing team.

At SIHS, the Head Teachers Wellbeing work closely with the school counsellors and the Student Support Officer (SSO) and liase with our families.

Students  can self-refer to their designated Head Teacher Wellbeing for support.

School counsellor

Our school counselling staff are members of the school Wellbeing team. They have extensive experience working with children, adolescents and their families.

Students  can self-refer to the counselling service by making a confidential appointment directly with the school counsellor, leaving a note with the Office or completing the School Counsellor Referral Form.

As a parent or guardian, you may refer your child directly to the school counselling service, by contacting the school.

School counselling is confidential.

Student Support Officer

Student Support Officers (SSOs) are qualified youth workers or social workers in high schools who work closely with the School Counselling Service and the wellbeing team to ensure students get the help they need to deal with anxiety, stress, or any difficult issue they may be facing at school.

Our SSO is there both to support individual students who may be having a tough time, and to help provide wellbeing initiatives and programs such as anti-bullying, positive relationships and digital citizenship.

Students  can self-refer to the SSO directly.
