About our school

St Ives High School is situated in spacious grounds on the upper north shore of Sydney. The school was established as a co-educational comprehensive high school in 1964 and is one of only 16 in NSW to have a support unit (hearing)

The school has close ties with its parent community, possesses high quality resources, and enjoys a reputation for academic and sporting achievement, participation in cultural activities, and holds high expectations of student excellence and intercultural understanding.

St Ives High School has a proud tradition of excellence in curricular and extra-curricular activities.

St Ives High School has close links with neighbouring primary schools in matters of curriculum, sharing of facilities and programs for gifted and talented children. In addition, the school is part of the 'North Shore 5' (NS5), where 5 North Shore high schools are combining to cooperate and provide broader curriculum choices, access to specialist teachers and a range of teaching facilities across the schools.

We were the first government high school in the state to establish a specially selected accelerated Year 7 class in 1993. This successful programme has enabled a number of students to accelerate and complete their Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and certain HSC subjects.

Teaching resources are of an extremely high standard.  The school encourages every student to reach a level of full potential in every activity. At the HSC examination, students consistently achieve quality results. Many of our students go on to receive offers from tertiary courses to further their study. Special programs are offered for those from non-English speaking backgrounds, those with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.

The school enjoys strong parental and community support for its traditions of excellence in a variety of academic, sporting and cultural pursuits.

Special features include:

  • dramatic, dance and musical productions
  • instrumental and choral performances
  • visual arts and design and technology exhibitions.

Students also excel in the realm of community services, assisting many charities as voluntary helpers and collectors. Leadership development is fostered through an active Student Representative Council, public speaking, debating, mock trial activities and international visits.

The school motto - Optima Optime - is a Latin quotation.
The English translation is: "The best possible things in the best possible way".
